What goes into designing a logo? Well, when you know that a picture is worth a thousand words, I wanted our logo to represent at a glance what we sell. When my sister's anual Christmas gifts of jewelry to her husband's colleagues were Sun Catchers instead of necklaces that they wore to the party, she realized they could be both. For windows. And for wear! All we had to do was make sure the top of each Sun Catcher was finished with a good pendant ring.
I just had to pick a window style that would be attractive, traditional, and adequately frame a graphic symbol of a Sun Catcher. The 'model' for the wear had to look feminine, modern, and attractive. I framed her in an oval to make the entire logo softer and not too angular. Even though we make a lot of other jewelry, especially for our specific customers in boutiques, and sold on Etsy as "Bling Things" we still like this logo for our main line.
When people ask me what we do, and I say, " We make Sun Catcher Pendants for windows or wear", they look a little perplexed until I point to the one I"m usually wearing. Then they say, "Oh. It's just jewelry!" "NO! We also sell the suction cup hooks so you can hang them in a window. " So we have changed the name to BLING THINGS to hang or wear. The other reason for that is that they don't just hang in windows, they hand on car mirrors, decorative stands, Christmas trees, landscaping, umbrellas, candelabras... we may have to change our logo!!!!
I love to go into the stores that take on our line of BLING THINGS and see how they display them. This is our latest retailer and we are delighted to find that Jill, the Lead Merchandiser has created a special venue, front and center, in the Spruce It Up Garden Centre for Canadian Made Art and Jewelry. Jesmic Jewelry shares this stage with other botanical inspired crafts and it's a nice mix. Not only do our Sun Catcher Pendants compliment each other but we are also contrasting to make a great cross merchandised theme.
The old buffet on which this stage is set adds a backdrop of natural country charm. Jill mentioned that they have other locally made garden related items like some of the bird houses. We are so impressed that even though lots of their buying is done from sources beyond Canada's border, they are still interested in making some space for those of us in their community as cottage industries.
One year ago in February a client of mine for whom I had done the leasehold improvements in her store several years ago called to ask me if my sister had a website. She said she was dropping her US costume jewelry line and was looking for a suitable line Made In Canada. My sister, Esther Susan (affectionately called "Susie" by me) has been designing and selling jewelry for many years. You can read the details about what we did with this opportunity on our ABOUT page.
This was a classic case of applying Susan's experience to an opportunity and some people call that "luck"! We call it "divine appointments" because we believe that when we are operating in our God-given gifts, interests, passions, and desires, we keep connecting to our destiny. For Susan and I, it means an opportunity to work together, as the daughters of a man who was a pastor by profession and a jewelry-clock maker by trade! Our mother was very artistic, creative, and skilled in designing all our clothes for boarding school in India.
As we have grown up and lived in a culture other than that of our own or our parents, we take new opportunities each day to advance our business. Jesmic Jewelry continues to evolve into a combination of what we want and what our prospects need in their retail stores. Each day is a 'lucky' day when you continue to apply your experience to your opportunities. Good luck!
I always attributed this to my Dad who quoted it a lot. He was a preacher by profession and a jeweler-clock repairman by trade. When fax cover sheets were used every day, I put this on the bottom of mine and recently cut it out and had it pinned on my bulletin board in my office.
Today I decided was the day to create something over a background of our BLING THING beads. I also decided it might be wise to look up the author on Google and to my delighted surprise it was Ann Landers! So I have gone one step further since we just celebrated the International Women's Day and am giving her credit while sharing this wonderful quote.
There is a Proverb (18:21) in the Bible that says, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. " Ann Landers was a very wise women and some of us are still 'eating' her words years later and enjoying the fruit from them. I have used each of these words in my life and each represents an attitude that will either propel us forward or keep us stagnant! Go ahead! Eat these words.
